She passed away Dec. 13, 2020, in the midst of a vigil to protest executions at the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute.

Terry found no shortage of social justice causes in the present era — an oil pipeline on sacred Native American land in North Dakota, violent white supremacists in Charlottesville, migrant children detained in Florida — but died before she could help commemorate a sudden, brutal sequence of historic injustices perpetrated by citizens of her own community 120 years ago.

The violence claimed two victims -- Ida Finkelstein, a Jewish schoolteacher just days short of her 21st birthday, and George Ward, a Black family man and foundry worker who was 25, according to census records.

UHC community agrees: Terry Fear helped forge an extended family in the congregation https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/uhc-community-agrees-terry-fear-helped-forge-an-extended-family-in-the-congregation/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/uhc-community-agrees-terry-fear-helped-forge-an-extended-family-in-the-congregation/#respond Mon, 11 Jan 2021 14:00:10 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=14707 On the first Shabbat following Terry Fear’s passing — one week after Terry had lit candles to begin the Temple’s virtual service — UHC members shared remembrances of their friend and colleague, who died suddenly Dec. 13 at age 66.

Among her many contributions to the congregation and community, Terry served as UHC vice president and secretary, led the Temple’s restoration efforts, coordinated special events in the sanctuary, served on the CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center board and worked widely for social justice.

Most satisfying of all for Terry, friends agreed, were her efforts to introduce people she admired and appreciated to each other, to foster knowledge, understanding and personal growth.

Terry Fear brought people together — this time, to honor her memory https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/terry-fear-brought-people-together-this-time-to-honor-her-memory/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/terry-fear-brought-people-together-this-time-to-honor-her-memory/#respond Fri, 08 Jan 2021 14:00:59 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=14496 Terry Fear brought people together to share friendship and perspective on faith. She worked diligently to improve her community and the wider world around her, and to preserve life. She softly sang Shabbat prayers to a close friend facing a quiet and peaceful death, only days before Terry herself passed away suddenly. She made her best effort to repair the world.

We learned these things as family, friends, fellow congregants and colleagues shared their remembrances of Terry during an Inter-Faith Council of the Wabash Valley virtual memorial and following United Hebrew Congregation’s regular Friday night Shabbat service. Only a week before, Terry had lit the Shabbat candles to begin this same event.

Remember Terry Fear by these words: ‘Do Justice. Love Mercy. March Proudly.’ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/remember-terry-fear-by-these-words-do-justice-love-mercy-march-proudly/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/remember-terry-fear-by-these-words-do-justice-love-mercy-march-proudly/#comments Mon, 21 Dec 2020 02:16:36 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=14392 “Do Justice. Love Mercy. March Proudly.”

These words guided Terry Fear, a fierce advocate for social justice. With boldness and a strong moral compass, Terry knew what she was called to do.

She planted herself firmly and deeply at the intersection of Judaism and social justice, believing that one cannot love God without a passion for justice. Terry showed her loving family and friends what is possible within a lifetime of good deeds.

Terry is remembered by her family and friends for the passion, generosity and grace with which she lived her life.

Terry Fear sought mindfulness of injustice and God’s expectations that we repair the world https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/terry-fear-sought-mindfulness-of-injustice-and-gods-expectations-that-we-repair-the-world/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/terry-fear-sought-mindfulness-of-injustice-and-gods-expectations-that-we-repair-the-world/#comments Fri, 18 Dec 2020 20:47:51 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=14348 On the first night of Hanukkah, Terry Fear brought her menorah to a site across from the federal penitentiary in Terre Haute. She lit a candle and recited prayers in quiet protest as the Justice Department carried out the execution of Death Row inmate Brandon Bernard.

Terry left a menorah with Sister Barbara Battista and fellow activist Abe Bonowitz to light a second candle the next night, as Alfred Bourgeois met his death.

To the end, Terry worked passionately for social justice while serving as a dynamic force in the life of United Hebrew Congregation. She passed away suddenly Sunday, Dec. 13, at age 66, at her home in Charleston, Ill.

For Orlando Hall, sitting on death row, 13 minutes sealed his execution.

Had those 13 minutes passed and the clock struck midnight, Orlando Hall’s stay of execution would have extended for 90 days. But a last-minute Supreme Court decision (6-3) vacated the stay.

At 11:47 p.m. EST Thursday, Nov. 19, Orlando Hall was pronounced dead at the U.S. Federal Penitentiary in Terre Haute. His official cause of death was “legal homicide”. He was 49 years old.

UHC board reflects on eventful year, elects officers, plans for challenges ahead https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/uhc-board-reflects-on-eventful-year-elects-officers-plans-for-challenges-ahead/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/uhc-board-reflects-on-eventful-year-elects-officers-plans-for-challenges-ahead/#respond Wed, 29 Jul 2020 13:00:34 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=13363 As United Hebrew Congregation president Betsy Frank noted with her D’Var Torah during the Temple’s annual meeting July 19, we begin our countdown to the High Holy Days with The Book of Deuteronomy.

Another name for Deuteronomy is Mishneh Torah, or “Repetition of Torah”. In Deuteronomy, Moses leads the Israelites through a reflection on their journey as a free people preparing to enter the Promised Land.

Here at UHC, Betsy reminded us the annual meeting is a time for consideration of our past year’s congregational journey and preparation for the High Holy Days of 5781 and beyond.

Never Again means Never Again for everyone https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/never-again-means-never-again-for-everyone/ https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/never-again-means-never-again-for-everyone/#respond Sat, 02 Nov 2019 13:00:23 +0000 https://www.unitedhebrewth.org/?p=10030 People in crisis should take precedence over narrow points of law or politics. But too often, compassion for human beings created in God’s image is left out of legal or geopolitical solutions.

I have become increasingly alarmed concerning the humanitarian crisis at America’s southern border. My husband Steve and I are firm believers in putting our beliefs into action.

On July 4, we were in Florida and made the three-hour drive to Homestead to find the federal detention center and protest on behalf of the migrant children held inside.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide, when members of the Hutu majority murdered some 800,000 people, mostly of the Tutsi minority.

The event is part of #TogetherWeRemember, an “annual international campaign to transform remembrance into action to end identity-based violence for all humanity.”
