Walter Sommers Kristallnacht talk at CANDLES for Friday, November 9, 2018 @ CANDLES Holocaust Museum & Education Center

UHC member and Kristallnacht survivor Walter Sommers will deliver a remembrance on the 80th anniversary of Kristallnacht at 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 9 at CANDLES Holocaust Museum and Education Center.

Walter will again speak about Kristallnacht at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at CANDLES, before a candle-lighting ceremony to remember victims of the Holocaust. Indiana State University Professor Chris Fischer will also speak Saturday.

Walter, who is 97, continues to appear as a docent at 1 p.m. each Wednesday and Friday throughout the year at CANDLES.

This Side of Eternity: The Story of Kristallnacht for Sunday, November 11, 2018 @ United Hebrew Congregation

Theater 7 will present a staged reading of This Side of Eternity: The Story of Kristallnacht, by former Terre Haute resident Christopher Bibby, at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, 2018, in the UHC sanctuary.

The event description reads: “In reflection of the 80th anniversary of this historic event, This Side of Eternity: The Story of Kristallnacht examines the nature of evil itself, the real human beings behind genocide, and asks if it’s possible to resist in the face of insurmountable odds.”

Rwandan genocide survivor Emmanuel Habimana will highlight the Together We Remember event and vigil to honor victims of identity-based violence, from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2019 in the sanctuary at United Hebrew Congregation.

The STAND club at Terre Haute South Vigo High School will present the event, which also marks the 25th anniversary of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi minority in Rwanda.

Farrington’s Grove Historical District will hold its Spring Beautification Project at 10 a.m. Saturday, April. 20, at 1304 S. 6th St., a half-mile south of the Temple.

Teams and individuals will clean up the neighborhood for 60-90 minutes. Lunch will follow. FGHD will provide t-shirts, refreshments, trash bags, gloves and sanitizer packets.

Dr. Nancy Sommers

Dr. Nancy Sommers, a native of Terre Haute and former member of United Hebrew Congregation, will be keynote speaker at 7 p.m. Sunday, May 5, for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) in the UHC sanctuary.

Her subject will be “My Mother’s Story — Creating Light from Darkness and Optimism out of Tragedy”. Dr. Sommers’s mother is Louise Levite Sommers, a Holocaust survivor and resident of Terre Haute.

Dr. Sommers is a prize-winning writer and internationally-recognized leader in the field of writing studies.

She directed the Harvard College Writing Program for 20 years and now teaches in the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

UHC board member Terry Fear will speak at the No Hate In Our State rally at 5 p.m. Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Vigo County Courthouse, 33 S 3rd St. in Terre Haute.

Wabash Valley in Solidarity called the rally in response to individuals distributing white supremacist flyers Monday in Terre Haute and reportedly in Paris, Ill.

The event page reads:

“This rally is in response to racist and anti-Semitic flyers recently distributed in Terre Haute and Paris, Ill. Join local organizations including Candles Holocaust Museum and Education Center, the Inter-Faith Council of the Wabash Valley, the Sisters of Providence, Indiana Women’s March, Indivisible Indiana 8th District, Social Action Committee of the First Unitarian Universalists and others to stand up and say we all belong here.

“We’ll be on the east-facing steps of the courthouse at 5 p.m. Bring a sign. Let’s inspire one another to take concrete action to show our neighbors and friends that we mean what we say: #LoveWins and #NoHateInOurState”.
