Torah Study for Saturday, April 24, 2021 @ UHC Virtual Vestry Room
Apr 24 @ 10:00 am – 11:00 am

Student Rabbi Caitlin Brazner will conduct a virtual Torah study at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, 2021, for United Hebrew Congregation.

Caitlin says, “Our last few gatherings have focused mainly on rabbinic texts related to our Jewish holidays. What a busy spring we’ve had!

“This week, we return to Parashat Hashavua, with an examination of this week’s double parashat, Acharei Mot/Kedoshim.

“Covering Leviticus 16:1-20:27, Acharei Mot/Kedoshim includes sections of the ‘Holiness Codes,’ a part of our Torah concerned with how we as Jews maintain our pure, particular and ‘holy’ status.

“We will examine these commands, challenging in directness and intensity, and discuss their relevance (or lack thereof) for us today as 21st century Reform Jews. The role of halakha and its relevance for us today as Reform Jews will also be examined.”

Shavuot study session for Sunday, May 16, 2021 @ UHC Virtual Sanctuary
May 16 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm

Herschel Chait and Susan Kray will lead a virtual Shavout study session via Zoom conference from 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 16, 2021.

The session will cover two vital questions:

  • Why are they trudging long, lonely dirt roads — just two lone women, Naomi and her foreign daughter-in-law, with no weapons, no bodyguards and no Krav Maga?
  • Seven prophets (Sarah, Miriam, Deborah, Hannah, Abigail, Huldah Esther) confront or command men: a warlord, a general, a priest, kings and heroes. So, how does a mild-mannered little foreigner, that go-along to get-along, rootless, roofless Ruth, rate a whole book all her own?

The event will also include a reading of the Book of Ruth.
